Happiness. For some, it comes easy but for others, it is a challenge. What is it that makes you happy? Since my return to the Catholic Church, I have found an abundance of things that make me happy. I look at my marriage through different lenses now and have a much greater appreciation for the sacramental beauty of it. I look at my bride am awestruck by her presence. Her beauty inside and out, is beyond what mere words could describe. I look at my now young adult children and I am filled with joy to have them in my life. I look at our two little dogs who make me laugh and smile. I look at my mom and I feel blessed that she is still here. I find happiness in the forest when the wind blows and I can smell the pines. I have many things in my life to be happy about but the biggest, most important thing that makes me happy is my relationship with Christ.
For the longest time, I felt as if I had no purpose in life. I felt as though I was lost. But through the grace of God I figured out that “not all those who wander are lost” as J.R.R. Tolkien said. I was wandering around looking for happiness in various things not knowing that the happiness that I had been struggling to find was there all along, in Christ, but I needed to learn that for myself.
Far too many people look for happiness in other things like food, shopping, alcohol, sex, smoking, money, etc… In the end, these will only bring a brief moment of satisfaction but will never bring you true happiness that can be attained through Christ. Psalm 37:4 – Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. When we do things, we should be doing them for the greater glory of God as St. Ignatius would say. Let us go out then and show the world the happiness that we have through Christ Our Lord and share that happiness with everyone we meet. God bless.
